Q: For this project, your team had free reign for the design. How did you come up with your vision for the cottage?
We wanted to create an environment that completely contrasted the client’s current home – which is very traditional. They had a collection of unique and colorful furniture pieces that sparked our creativity. Not often do we get to design with such a fun color palette, so we wanted to ensure we were showcasing these pieces and providing the perfect setting for them. We also wanted to stay in character with the Muskoka feel, providing many beautiful white and bright textures throughout the space. Overall, we were after a playful yet timeless design aesthetic.

Q: Tell us about the mix of materials and attention to detail evident throughout the home?
We are always cautious not to create a “sterile “environment when designing with white, so the details are critical. With this home, we incorporated a variety of white paneling, stone, natural wood, and tile textures throughout to create the perfect balance for a cozy and inviting environment. Utilizing various materials also allows the eye to wander, which we strive for in our designs.

Q: For this project, the cable railing is used as a design element. How did this idea evolve?
The cable railing design was introduced to provide a sense of separation from the stairwell to the entryway. We did not want this space to feel too open, but we did not want to block it off completely. By going with a simple stainless cable, your eye naturally still sees through to the other spaces, but you also get this great feature and backdrop for the entry. Often homes are designed with a more open concept but creating defined areas within an open layout is the key to good design.

Q: Why did you select Bezdan Cable surface mount components for this project?
We work with Stairhaus for all our stair projects, and they have worked hard developing great relationships and suppliers to support our design needs. We trust the partnerships they have developed and have always been so thrilled with the outcome.
Q: What challenges and learnings did you encounter?
When designing the stainless cable system, we worked with a 10’ floor to ceiling height, so we needed to ensure we provided the proper support in both the floor and the ceiling to get the cables taut enough and create a safe barrier. Our builder, Tamarack, along with Stairhaus, accommodated all these details for an outstanding result.
