Update: Horizontal Railing Now Code Approved in Quebec

Quebec has adopted the sections of the 2015 National Building Code related to guardrail requirements and climbability, effective January 8, 2022.
The new code offers greater freedom for guardrail infill design, which means that Quebec residents can now explore and appreciate a wider range of guardrail types, including horizontal guardrails.
Please refer to the Quebec Building Code, Chapter I - Building, and the National Building Code - Canada 2015 (amended).
Can you install Horizontal Railing in Quebec?
Quebec homeowners can now install horizontal railings including cable railing, cross tube or rod and horizontal lengths for their stairs, decks, and railings.

What is the Quebec Building Code?
The Quebec Building Code covers a wide range of aspects related to building construction, including building materials, structural requirements, fire safety, plumbing, electrical systems, energy efficiency, accessibility, and more. The code is periodically updated to incorporate advancements in construction practices, technology, and safety standards.

9.8.8.6. Design of Guards to Not Facilitate Climbing
1) Except for guards in industrial occupancies, guards required by Article 9.8.8.1. that protect a level located more than 4.2 m above the adjacent level shall be designed so that no member, attachment or opening located between 140 mm and 900 mm above the level protected by the guard facilitates climbing. (See note A-9.8.8.6.(1).)
